A Hint of Fall at the Jerome Farmers Market

As August begins to wind down, the gardens are changing. The weather may still be warm and dry, but there’s a feeling in the morning air that tells us fall is coming. The days are getting just a little shorter, the gardens are shifting, and harvest season is settling in.

We’ve been picking up plenty of peaches and pears, and now is a wonderful time for canning and preserving. Tomatoes are making a fabulous appearance, the peppers are right where they should be, and while watermelon and cantaloupe are beginning to slow down, other fruits and vegetables are ripening to take their places. That’s one of the wonderful things about shopping with the seasons—there is always something new coming on.

With school now in session, many of us are also starting to think ahead. It’s time to put food by for the winter, fill the freezer and pantry, and enjoy the abundance that comes with late summer.

This is also a great time to begin a little pre-holiday shopping. The Jerome Farmers Market can help take some of the stress out of the busy months ahead. Pick up locally made gifts now, stock up on honey, and tuck a few things away before the holiday rush begins.

And here’s a little reminder: sourdough bread freezes beautifully and can hold for months. Pick up an extra loaf, put it in the freezer, and you’ll be very happy to have it when the first cool “soup” day arrives.
